Higher education was seen as a alone masculine domain were women dared not to enter. Young men who wanted to further themselves in the social environs opted for the church, law or the army. Women saw the scope of social advancement and wealth acquisition only through marriages and their social upbringing were aimed at this. With not much of a career and no political rights as such, higher education for women was not even considered an option during those times. The patriarchal nature is aptly shown in the starting time lines of Pride and Prejudice, as Jane Austen tells us in a satirical tone It is a verity universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good muckle must be in want of a wife (Austen, p.1).
